Maxi Taxi
Maxi-taxi/bus service is available in all six main communities in the Jiu Valley. An extensive system connects the valley's communities to the main hub in Petrosani.
In Petrosani the maxi-taxi station is located on the main highway, just across the footbridge from the rail station. Maxi-taxis leave often (generally when the driver determines that there are enough passengers to warrant the trip), sometimes every few minutes. Look at the sign in the windshield of a given maxi-taxi to know which community it services.
The cities of Vulcan and Lupeni are on the same line as Uricani.
Fares are very reasonable (e.g., approx. $ 0.35 between Petrosani and Lupeni), though the maxi-taxis are often crowded and slow, stopping in many locations between towns and the main road. On the return trip, stops are not well marked in most of the communities. It is best to remember where you were dropped off, or ask a local to direct you to the nearest stop. For large groups heading into Parang, the Retezat, or a cabana, it is often practical to hire a maxi-taxi to take you to the trailhead or end of the road. Maxi-taxis can be hired on the spot at the main station in Petrosani.
Taxi
Taxi service is available in Petrosani at the taxi station on the main highway, just across the footbridge from the rail station. Most taxis will take you anywhere in the valley, but once outside Petrosani, there is no taxi service in any of the other communities for the return trip. One option is to secure the telephone number of taxi driver and call when ready for a return ride. Taxi fares are reasonable, but always negotiate up front the price.
Car Rentals
While there are currently no car rental agencies in the valley, some individuals in the area may be willing to rent their cars.
