The region surrounding the Jiu Valley is an area of significant undeveloped natural potential for adventure travel and tourism. Comparatively it is the largest and the most complete mountain area in Romania. The geography of the Jiu Valley is neatly divided into three major mountain areas: the Parang, the Valcan, and the Retezat Mountains (For our purposes, we have divided the Retezat into its northern and southern areas due to its size and accessibility.) The following is a description of each and of what each has to offer. We also offer a short list of non-mountain destinations that should be of interest to visitors. (Also see "Itineraries")
(When visiting each mountain and forest area, please remember to stay on designated trails, especially on steep sections. Cutting through switchbacks can cause considerable erosion damage to the mountain face. Also, be sure to bring a trash bag for your own trash and for that left by others. Leave the mountain cleaner than you found it.)
(Hiking in mountain areas during winter months is not recommended unless proper equipment and precautions are used.)
